It?s a funny thing that those who try to innovate tend to date the quickest. With their anarchic genre-shredding and futureproof technology hi-jacks. Or at least an acquaintance with a drum sequencer. Look at Pop Will Eat Itself now ? cute, huh? Even The Music?s recent bid to make indie music surge and groove turned out misguided in two deflated dimensions. But with Manchester?s musical electrode addicts The Longcut things feel different, we sense an untamed live wire. Which isn?t to say they?ll be immune to remaining locked up in 2006, just that there?s more visceral beat mining here than you can shake an excited Peter Hook at, and that?s not so easy to write off or tie down. They?re essentially The Music, but with materials beyond a mere blueprint. From a goggle-eyed Hacienda loving pace to the searing near-toneless expression of The Rapture?s liberal funk, the heightened blazing drone of Sonic Youth, the sterility of New Order and a post-rock knack for arranging opposing aspects and rocketing toward a climax, they are loaded to extremes, immaculately. They are Come On Die Young dancing, and with an album that can handle the association. "The Kiss Off" is a delightful melding of the Beta Band?s low altitude trundling, the KLF?s sense of awe and a finale touchpaper lit under Thurston Moore. "Lonesome No More!" is first album Stone Roses interfacing with Mogwai and worthy of its exclamation mark. And if it is genuine innovation that dates a record, you?ve probably got about a fortnight to get this while it?s hot.

Innovative Grower well worth the purchase!. Its great to see 2006 throwing up as many surprises as 2005 and Longcut is definately one not to be missed this year. There are so many influences here that it is hard to pin down what style Longcut fit other than to say "it sounds great". Its not quite what you expect if you've heard the beautiful single "Holy Funk" though haunting tunes do underpin the whole cd. The stomping "A Quiet Life" is potentially one of the best moments of music this year with the intensity of Arcade Fire. And "Vitamin C" is the sort of music The Cure should be doing these days - melodic and painful all at once. I'm sure by next week other tracks will stand out more than those mentioned, such is the depth of the music. From the catchy "A tired and tested method" to the Disintegration like "the kiss off", this is fresh and unlike most things you'll hear this year.

Promise fulfilled. A long time in the making (the single Transition was first heard in Novemeber 2004), this album has fully realised the promise of Manchester's The Longcut, synonymous with the famous Hacienda club. An interesting line up, with the lead singer Stuart both singing, and playing the drums (extremely intriguing when one sees them live on stage!). Their sound is relatively unique, with strong emphasis on the use of instruments, which I feel is key to offer something unique, fresh and exciting within the saturated 'independent' market. This aspect illustrated by songs such as 'A Last Act of Desparate Men', and 'Holy Funk'. Overall, an infectious album with a unique sound, fully capable of cementing their status as a truly superb band.

Bloody good album!. Hey,
I bought this album on itunes and as the description reccommends that they are post-grunge i would suggest that this band is not too far off the mark from sounding like bands such as Sonic youth, Mogwai, Joy Division & Neu. Definately worth the purchase!
