"Jen is a cheerleader and Jack's on the football team. I got sane and everyone else went crazy?" That's how Andie (Meredith Monroe) sums up the topsy-turvy beginning to the third season of Dawson's Creek, in which nothing seems to be as it should and the series takes a major turn. It's junior year at Capeside High, and Jack (Kerr Smith), the town's resident gay teen, is indeed on the football team, and Jen (Michelle Williams) finds herself the object of unexpected and unwelcome popularity among her fellow students, especially the freshman quarterback (Michael Pitt). Pacey (Joshua Jackson) finds that his relationship with Andie can't be restored, and Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes), after the events of last year, both think it's for the best that they're no longer together--they just never think it at the same time. Significant events include the friends starting to date outside their circle, Dawson's giving up some of his aspirations, a ! crisis for the school's new principal, a college tour, and the openings of the Potter Bed & Breakfast and Leery Fresh Fish. But the Dawson-Joey relationship is still the heart of the Creek, and it comes to a head in one of the series' most memorable episodes, "The Longest Day," and then the season finale. Even in its first season without series creator Kevin Williamson, Dawson's Creek still had plenty of punch. On the DVDs, executive producer Paul Stupin does his usual commentary track for two episodes, and he's joined by Kerr Smith. They discuss the series itself, Smith's character, and Smith's subsequent career more than the events of the episodes. The second-season DVD set disappointed many fans by replacing a large portion of the music, and that trend continues in the third season, most surprisingly in the loss of Paula Cole's theme song. Instead, the opening credits feature Jann Arden's "Run Like Mad," which was used briefly in the international broadcast. Stupin explains the switch as an attempt to do something different and creative, but then admits there was also "a bit of an economic reality." Fortunately, the DVDs do have John Lennon's "Imagine" and Mary Beth Maziarz's "Daydream Believers"--songs that in dramatic context simply could not have been replaced--and it could be argued that a veteran viewer might skip the opening credits anyway. Still, for many fans, the music made Dawson's Creek what it was, and without all of it--especially the theme song--the DVDs seem like a compromise rather than a permanent keepsake.

Customer Review 1

Beware the Changing Production Team. Despite all the five star reviews, this is not the best season of the DVD release of The Creek. I can only guess that many of these reviews were written by people who have only seen the on-air show - which is different to the English language version in the DVD set ! Yes I know that sounds complicated and it is ! The change from the wonderful scripts of seasons one and two to a much less sophisticated approach is true for both on-air and dvd. However the contractual issues by which the music on the English language version of the DVD is different from that of the actual broadcast programmes means that you have a sub standard DVD release for Season 3. Ironically, if you listen to the French language version of Season three on the DVD you will hear the original theme music and also much more appropriate episode music. Take for example the song used for the opening few minutes of Episode One. In the broadcast (and foreign language versions) the song counterpoints first Joeys state of mind, then that of Jack. The music on the English language version is just there to fill in the space and makes no additional contribution to the show. What a great shame all this is. The good news, for those who purchased the box set is that things improve half way through the season and then get better with Seasons Four and Five. Even if Season Six is a bit hit or miss it is still 100% better than any UK attempts to do similar series and the final episodes are first rate. The script improves even if you have the same contractual problem preventing the "real" music from being used on the DVD right up to the end. The magic of Seasons One and Two is gone for ever but there is still much pleasure to be had once the nonsense of the first half of Season Three is over and Eve vanishes. Unless you are a real fan of The Creek none of my rambling will make any sense !!

Customer Review 2

Compromised by the music. Let me say right off that had the producers not changed the original soundtrack, then I would have given Season Three 5 stars. It is the season which stands out the most in my mind, and Dawson's Creek is the definitive teen drama. The characters possess an element of naivety - even innocence, which other teen shows lack. Perhaps more worldly-minded viewers will roll their eyes at Joey when she says 'If a kiss is purely physical, if there's nothing else behind it, then what's the point?' but I wish more teenagers thought like her. I love Pacey and Joey, but as a returning 20-something viewer who loved Season 3 as a teenager, I was extremely disappointed by the show's producers decision to change the original music. Even the opening track, Paula Cole's 'I Don't Want To Wait' has been replaced by Jann Arden's 'Run Like Mad.' As a result, I found that I was not able to enjoy the DVD as much because of it. Remember the song that was playing as Pacey kissed Joey for the first time (sang by Tara McLean?) Well they changed it! They can't - and shouldn't have - done that! I suppose that for customers purchasing the boxset for the first time, the music won't make a difference, but I found that a certain emotional aspect that was so prominent when Season 3 aired on TV was considerably lacking. And that is a real shame because this is truly Dawson's Creek at its best.

Best. Season. Ever.. Season three had a slow start, I must admit. When the DVD box cover showed Pacey and Joey together, I squealed with delight and immediately went to watching it. Upon finishing the second disc, I grew more and more aggitated. Where was the romance? Were they ever going to discover their feelings for each other? I took a few weeks off from watching it (I usually finish a season in a matter of days), and when I finally returned to pop in another disc -- wow! I was blown away. This was what I'd been waiting for. Clearly the writers were a little sketchy on where they were going with the Joey/Pacey thing. They toyed in and out in the first two discs on whether they would get together or not. Some episodes would have me sitting on the end of my seat, grinning madly. Others made me wonder if they'd ever get to the good stuff. But once that third disc came around, the episodes began to REALLY shine, much more so then any episode of season two and possibly season one. This is true especially on the last disc, my favorite set of episodes of Dawson's EVER. Pacey has always been my favorite character ever since the pilot, and yes, he truly shines here. He is the show's hero, the romantic, the goofball... the star. Not to mention he is played by the better looking and more talented Joshua Jackson. Dawson continues to whine and mope throughout, something that made me roll my eyes constantly and laugh at how pathetic he really is. He goes through a "mid-life crisis", so to speak (at age 16), and is a downer who is really trying to "find" himself. Toward the end of the season, he is just a jackass. This year, we see two former "enemies" develop a slow, but beautiful relationship, one that really would alter the course of the series. To see Pacey with Joey, we realize how lame and boring Dawson really is, and how little chemistry he has with her. So if you like True Love and happy endings, then you'd love season three.

Customer Review 4

A divided Creek. Aha now this season has a rocky start but develops into what Dawson's creek is best for, It's romances and trust me this seasons romance is a whirlwind love triangle set to cause loads of that teen angste. It's Dawsom, Joey and...Pacey! Some great acting, great plots and of course some great melo drama! a great season.

Customer Review 5

Dawson's Creek: Season 3 - It's not that good. I have been watching DC since season 1 first aired on Channel 4 on Saturday evenings. I have become quite concerned with the number of people on here who have written in saying that DC season 3 is the best. Season 3 is by far the WORSE season of DC. If you do not believe me, then ask the show's creator - Kevin Williamson, he will tell you the same thing. (N.B., Kevin Williamson only returned when asked by the stars to write the final ever episodes of DC).Kevin Williamson (the show's creator and executive producer) left DC after season 2 and his presence is greatly missed. The whole storyline with Eve is a complete mess, so much so that the show's producers decided to cut it midway through the season, "saving nose to spite face". The resulting product is that we have Dawson looking like a gutless coward for not telling Jen (one of his best friends) about her biological relationship with Eve. Gramps also comes out of it looking morally wrong for not disclosing the secret.Getting Pacey and Joey to hook up is fine, but in the process we have them keeping their relationship with Dawson a secret. The problem with that is that when Dawson finds out about it - he looks and sounds like a whiny old loser and this goes on a for a number of episodes. This development is extremely irritating, so much so that you hope someone will tell him to shut up and get on with his own life. See the scene with Dawson crashing Pacey's boat in the regatta, and the scene in the final episode with Dawson and Joey on the pier, to really see how whiny and irritating he has become. The storylines with Jen and Andie are a complete waste of time aswell. Jen gets a new boyfriend (Henry), however, his chase of her is extremely nauseating, for example, he gives his own blood so that he has enough money to pay for a date - please!!! The producers had enough sense to get rid of Henry in the season 4. Ironically, he dumps her over the phone. We can also see the demise of Andie as plots concerning her character start to become very sketcy. No surprise then that in season 4 she gets written out of the show completely. At least there is some development with Jack with him joining the football team and maybe forming a relationship with another boy (Ethan). All in all season 3 was very hard to watch. It was a very poorly written season with bad character development for the most part. At least things improved somewhat in season 4!!!
