In a world dominated by grim and gritty console games, it's difficult to find a madcap adventure about the triumphs of a goofball would-be pirate. Yet that's exactly what we have in Escape from Monkey Island. This PC port follows the latest misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood as he tries to make sense of his ridiculous world; the PC-style gameplay consists of conversing, exploring, and lots of puzzle-solving; gamers who lack patience or who loathe Myst-like puzzles might want to skip this game, but they'll be missing out on one of the most unique console experiences on the market. The game's forte is clearly its style. Its dialogue, while sometimes lengthy, is often witty and boisterously entertaining. Its characters and environments are bright and vibrant. Its puzzles--in which you often match wacky objects in bizarre situations--are straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Few games can match Escape from Monkey Island's humour, and those that can aren't on the PlayStation 2. Although the character designers and animators were able to achieve a playful style, some of the series' personality was lost in the translation from 2-D sprite-based graphics to 3-D polygons. Still, there's really nothing else like it on the PS2. Gamers looking for something different, or wanting to take a break from saving the world from cataclysmic menaces, should give this game a shot.

Good adventure but not true to the series. For those who have never played an adventure game, like Escape From Monkey Island, the gameplay of this genre focuses on risk-free exploring of locations, finding items, interacting with characters and solving puzzles, rather than jumping across platforms or shooting deadly enemies. I would recommend that newcomers to the Monkey Island series try any of the three previous (PC) games before this one.
An important thing to say is that there are only a couple of differences, mostly not related to gameplay, between this edition of Escape From Monkey Island and the PC version.
The essence of the story is that pirate Guybrush Threepwood finds out that a sinister Australian is planning to take over his homeland of Melee Island, and that his mansion is up for demolition. Things get worse when he stumbles upon an ancient curse called the Ultimate Insult, and must learn more about it in an attempt to stop it getting into the wrong hands.
The most obvious change is that the game is in 3D. It may have been a step forward for the series in graphical technology, but I personally preferred the style of the previous game, the Curse of Monkey Island. If it's a quirky, humourous game, I think it should have a cartoony look.
The control system has changed too. Rather than selecting the point where you want Guybrush to move to, you move him directly with the analogue stick. Interactions are carried out by selecting from a list of options, which vary with each object or character. The irritating thing is that you only have to walk up to a door for Guybrush to go through it, so you can accidently keep entering or exiting a location! It's a good change though, as the old system would not have worked well on the PS2.
Unlike the previous games, this one isn't very piratey. You don't meet many pirate characters and rather than attacking ships and looking for priceless artefacts, your journey will inolve wandering around banks and coffee shops! The biggest letdown is that there is none of the enjoyable Insult Sword Fighting.
If you loved the old LucasArts adventure games, you'll probably enjoy this, but fans of the series are bound to feel let down.

WHAT WENT WRONG???. This is the worst Monkey Island game out of all of them - it is simply terrible! Each Monkey Island game went from strength to strength (2 and 3 being the best) but this has hit rock bottom! For a start it has some of the most rushed and crap graphics of a game in recent years and it just isn't... FUNNY!!!! Please avoid, buy the curse of monkey island instead, it is much better! This is very, very bad and an insult to all Monkey Island fans!

The Monkey Island series kicks ass!. I was bought this version of Escape for the Christmas that PS2 came out, and I absolutely loved the whole way you go about playing and the way the puzzles make you think in a certain "Guybrushesque" style. So I set about playing the others in the series (thankfully finding out a friend owned the first 2 and was also a devotee), and am now a devoted fan. Some people might find it a little difficult to get in to, but once you've got the mindset it's a great game! Be prepared for a little craziness, and a heck of a lot of fun with Guybrush, the ultimate piratng hero! Everyone should own this game!

Fustrating. I got this game for christmas. It was cool at first and i thought it was brilliant. But that's when i found out that all you do in the game is say the right things to the right people and you get rewarded. That sound fun? Well it's not. It takes ages to get rewarded and it's just fustrating that you can't draw a sword out it's sheath and slash your enemy to pieces.

Shiver me timbers this is a good game!. Escape from Monkey Island is a top game if anyone reads this you will want to buy it. Escape from Monkey Island is based on a not so swashbuckling pirate named Guybrush Threepwood. As with the other monkey island games it's a real puzzler from the first to the last puzzle. In Escape from Monkey Island you will really have to rack your brains. This is the first and sadly maybe the last Monkey Island game that is in the series of four to be in 3-D it has lush graphics, beautiful backgrounds and some hilarious charcters. This game will last you a long time, a good 25-30 hours. The controls are pretty good and you can save anywhere you want. I think this is a brilliant game and so do other customers on Amazon but I would try to complete the other three before you begin. Top marks from me! P.S my favourite charcter is Otis.
