17-year-old Lucinda falls in love with a gorgeous, intelligent boy, Daniel, at her new school, the grim, foreboding Sword & Cross ...only to find out that Daniel is a fallen angel, and that they have spent lifetimes finding and losing one another as good & evil forces plot to keep them apart. Some angels are destined to fall...
This book is not as well written as the Twilight saga, and sometimes the narrative is confusing, and a bit jumpy, ie seems to skip to parts, and I kept thinking "have I missed a page here" and you wonder where some of the characters have disappeared to, but the underlining story and what will happen next is definitely a winner, and will have readers desperate to find out what is going to happen to Luce, Daniel and Cam!! Loved it!! Roll on September!!
I must admit I only bought this book because I liked the cover and I'm so glad I did. Although this book is aimed at the teenage girl market I'm in my 20's and still thoroughly enjoyed it!! The end of every chapter left me wanting so much more and I cannot wait for Torment to come out in September. I think a lot of people will try to compare this series to the Twilight saga, and while it is true that a lot of people who liked Twilight will also like Fallen, I feel this could also appeal to those who don't. It's equally as good a Twilight, but in its own, very different ways. A definite must have!!
So I got this book a while ago as a proof copy (I work in a bookshop) and I took it away on holiday thinking it sounded good. Well, I have to say it is one of the worst books I've ever read. It was poorly written and to me seemed like a carbon copy of all other fantasy type teen novels. I couldn't even make it half way through. And it made me cringe. I would strongly suggest you try something worth while. From reading plenty of other books I can suggest something such as Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. It is well written and has a gripping story, unlike Fallen. Very disappointed if I am honest.
I've been reading both hush hush by Becca Fitzpatrick and Fallen and I have to say i like then both however I do enjoy Hush' more. Thats not to say I wont be picking up Torment, but I am a little worried that it wont live up to the bar set by hush.
Okay, I bought this book because of the beautiful cover and then I started reading it and really liked it. The problem came at the end, it all started to get a bit stupid and when she's finally got the boy its a bit too boring. The end was okay but the thing of nearly everyone in the school being an angel I found quite stupid, I mean, one or two okay, but it was nearly every single character, it spoiled it for me. But in general, it was good and will read Torment!
There has been such a flux of these types of book recently that they are all starting to blend into one now. I found this one to be a little predictable with not enough forward momentum. If you are lookin for a book about fallen angels then Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush Hush was a really great, fast-paced book in my opinion. OK but not great.
I read this book to see if it was suitable for my 11 year old daughter as on the cover the review said 'Sexy, fascinating and scary'. I didn't find any part of the book matching that description. I found the book lacking in plot. It spends far too much time trying to set the scene and build the characters, somehow failing to recognise that you need some plot to maintain interest for the reader. I was left feeling that the book needed better editing to reduce the length so that the plot came through more strongly rather than just in the last 100 pages. It will be interesting to see what my daughter makes of it.
Luce has just transferred to Sword & Cross reform school and is completely out of her element. She doesn't know anyone and is struggling to fit in, make friends and learn the rules. She is instantly attracted to Daniel but he seems determined to avoid her and when forced to speak to her is usually downright rude. Despite his attitude she can't help but feel they have a connection, if only she can get him to open up to her she might be able to convince him. Then there is Cam - who makes no secret of his interest in her - but why does she feel she shouldn't trust him? Fallen is one of those books that I've seen mixed reviews for so I really wasn't too sure what to expect when reading it. If you haven't already read Fallen then I'd have to urge you to forget anything you may have heard and read it yourself. Yes I had a few minor niggles along the way but overall I found it was an enjoyable read & I'm really looking forward to reading Torment. This book is very character driven so there isn't much action until right near the end of the book but I was completely sucked into Luce's world. Lauren Kate's writing is descriptive and leaves you able to picture the reform school perfectly. I could feel Luce's attraction for Daniel and their connection felt real despite his attitude towards her for most of the story. It was easy to imagine yourself in Luce's place starting at a new school not knowing how anything is supposed to work and finding it hard to know who to trust. Yes she makes mistakes and at times you want to scream at her not to do what she is about to do but I think most of us have made mistakes when it comes to love - especially as teenagers. I found that made her a more real character & easier to relate to. Luce is a young girl who is confused by the events that brought her to reform school, she is cut off from her family and friends and in an unfamiliar environment. She doesn't know how to deal with her feelings for Daniel and she is also confused by the attention she is getting from Cam. He seems like he would make an ideal boyfriend but for some reason her instincts warn her against him. There are also some great secondary characters - I particularly liked Penn who made an excellent friend for Luce and had me laughing out loud with her quirky ways. The action at the end felt a little rushed and I would have liked to have seen it drawn out more but there was a fab twist that I didn't spot coming. I enjoyed what we have found out so far about the fallen angel mythology Lauren has created, yes there are plenty of unanswered questions but I'm very much looking forward to finding out more in Torment. Overall I found Fallen an enjoyable read and would definitely recommend it to fans of young adult paranormal romance. If you're looking for something that is non-stop action from the first page then this may not be the book for you but if you enjoy a character driven romance with well written characters then it is well worth picking up a copy.
Whilst this theme seems to be replacing Vampires in young adult fiction, the author really has to do something special to keep the audience glued. That said this offering is one that has had a lot of press, a lot of hype and a fair few reasonable reviews from people that I tend to trust. So feeling a tad more confident about this title I finally bit the bullet and decided to give it a go What unfurled however was sadly disappointing, the plot was slow, the "sexy" aspect pretty tame and it really didn't put any fear into me as it wound its way to its conclusion. It did have potential, it did have some interesting characters however the ones that spoke to me had fleeting parts to play and the author really let themselves down with substandard two dimensional principle protagonists. A sad shame in my opinion but at the end of the day these things sometimes happen.
I was un-sure about this book as some of the reviews are not great; I decided to get it anyway... Best thing I've done! What a great book I was completely gripped from the first line and finished the book in less than 48hrs,as i really didnt want to close the book. The descriptions are so detailed I could picture everything perfectly! The story is great and leaves you guessing what will happen. Lauren Kate is a brilliant writer! People that buy this genre of book always try and compare it to twilight- which really bugs me! So ignore reviews that try and compare! I hope that when you buy this book you will enjoy it as much as I did -and the best part is that there will be 3 more books to follow on! The only bad this is i have to wait until September for the next one -'torment'!
