Disappointed. I love the final fantasy games, this was my first one on DS and i was hoping that since it was a new-ish game it would have a really good storyline and gameplay. I found that it was quite easy, there were no mini-games really and there was just the one storyline - whereas the final fantasy games are usually quite complex and take a while to master - altogether i found this game boring and not challenging enough to make me want to complete it!
There are some good things about it though, the battle sequences are good and it is quite fun to play if you don't like complticated storylines.

A great way to waste 40 hours!. A great way to waste a good 40 hours
though not even comparable in quality to latest installements of this god-like series, FF3 DS is a brilliant remake of a pearl of early RPG making.
the story is almost nonexistant comprising of 4 light warriors trying to awaken 4 crystals and save the world from darkness. and it really never gets any more complex.
the battle system in utterly simple turn based old skool easyness. the jobs just starting to make real sense in this edition.
where this game is great is the ease of play - the fact any amateur can pick it up and get to grips with one of the easiest systems in any FF. the remake has introduced recognisable charactermodels and personalities for the 4 light warriors (4 nameless clones in original) and the game is pretty, uses the stylus stylishly (?) and was just simple enjoyability all the way through. it is also really hard later on.
the down points are the lack of any story - something even the most basic RPGs today have in droves. this was where it was starting. it serves its purpose but goes no further, the remake adds some individuality to the proceedings but not much besides. The game in really simple and for ff aholics it doesn't offer much in the customisability areas. very toned down.
overall, a solid retro fantasy spruced up with the power of the awesome DS. makes what was an almost impossible title to love into something any ff player could play and enjoy. for that it deserves recognition.
it also serves as a practice run for the development company before they release all the stops and tackle the beast of FF4.
if its this only with a story and characters to care about it cant go far wrong.

Beautifully put-together. I'm a sucker for role-palying games (RPGs) and this one fulfills my geek needs. You get a team of cute-as-heck characters to progress up levels. The graphics are very pretty - I never get bored of the way the view of your characters spins through three-dimensions when a battle commences.
The music is very good too - probably some of the most atmospheric music that I've heard on a DS game. It's funny because when I was about 16 hours through the game, I thought that the music and gameplay was getting a bit repetitive. But then you complete another stage and the game opens up a whole batch of new character classes to you. Actually, on the topic of character classes, I think that one of the cunning things about the game is that you HAVE to change character classes (or 'job classes' in the game) in order to solve certain challenges. So the game forces you to change character class, which means that you have to experience different aspects of the game play. (Having said that, some FFIII expert will probably come along now and say that you don't have to change classes at all - oh well!)
The gameplay is fairly standard for a RPG. You battle creatures, pick up gold and experience points, and level up your party. You buy different weapons and new spells and try to get your characters stronger and stronger for their next battles.
Many people have commented on the fact that you can only save on the main game map rather than when you are in dungeons. Yes, this can seem a bit brutal, but it makes the big battles all the more satisfactory when you get killed once but then reload and level up your team to win it the second time around.
I've seen some online stuff about FFIV and can't WAIT to buy that too!

Great graphics and very playable. I've been playing this game for about 20 hours so far and I have no idea how far I'm into it. But the graphics are lovely. The little team that you control is really cute and watching the cut scenes when 'important' events happen is quite entertaining.
There are quite a few character classes (or 'jobs' in Final Fantasy world) to choose from. Only a few of these are open to you to begin with, but I got offered a new batch of job classes about 8 hours into the game and then another batch about 4 or 5 hours later.
The battles are a little repetitive - and I find that all I need to do is hit the 'attack' key rather than do anything terribly subtle. So that's why I've given this only a 3 out of 5 star rating for fun. It is good fun - but I'm now playing more because I want to find out what happens in the end. The battles are more of an impediment to my completion of the game rather than something incredibly fun that I am *desperate* to complete.
Good music and decent sound effects.
Would I recommend? Yes, overall. But it's a *good* game rather than one of the best I have ever played.
