I started reading this book on Monday and two days later am done, having nearly thrown up, cried and cringed at the humour in here. If you know and love Frankie Boyle from Mock The Week, then this will suit you perfectly. It rattles along at a rare old pace although I must confess he balances out the factual stuff with tangential shifts into sheer force 10 comedy. As ever, his opinions are not for the faint hearted, but frankly what on earth would you be reading this book for if you are easily offended or someone keen on balancing out opinion in some kind of liberal nirvana? Frankie merely casts his eye on things that are personal to him and delivers his opinion. You may not agree with all, but I dare say he couldn't give two stuffs either way. Put simply, this is the funniest book I have ever read in my life. It is so good it should form part of the curriculum and then perhaps we might actually speak up when things are as rubbish as they are right now.
Ithink frankie boyle is a very funny man,i found his book awful, the operative word is in the title!!
Bought for a member of my family at christmas havent read it but i do know it was the cheapest around with free delivery.
I was given this book a a gift, and read it knowing that I like Frankie Boyle's stand up and I would be willing to give it a go, as it not something I would read normally. Frankie's stand up humour and wit do come through in the book well, there are some good moments where I laughed out loud. However I quickly got bored with the book, as seemingly every paragraph had to have a punch line and this grew tiresome and predictable. The main drawback of the book, was that his life story so far did not interest me and any story with any potential for some some deeper meaning was not explored. In my opinion his stand up is razor sharp, funny and extremely offensive. But it has not translated well into book form!
If you are a fan of Frankie Boyle you'll like it. Some very crude language but that's just him....decent read.
Like many people who have reviewed this book I like Frankie Boyle on Mock The Week but this book is very, very poor. I just found it very boring, nasty and depressing and at times I had to force myself to finish it. Avoid if you think this will be a fun filled read.
I was so disappointed when I started reading this. I am a fan of Frankie having seen him on Mock the Week and hearing some of his stand up. However, I found the book very difficult to read and enjoy. I don't feel it was written well! There is a lot of what I can only describe as babbling - certain parts of the book don't seem to have any reasoning behind where they are, almost as if he'd just been writing literally what came out of his mind! Yes there are some funny moments (some very very funny moments), but in general a little dull. I had to stop reading half way through as I'd become so bored with his writing style that I couldn't continue. I can see why some people would enjoy this, and other people I know who have read it enjoyed it - it just wasn't one for me!
I got this book for Christmas and, to keep the hubby happy, I made a point of reading it sooner rather than later. First off, the introduction is UTTERLY hilarious!! Had the book maintained this calibre all the way through, this would have been a five star review. Much of the first half of the book is very funny. I also grew up in the Glasgow area and Frankies' tales brought back many memories of my own early schooldays. As the book moves on to his more mature (we use the word loosely here..) the nature of it changes. With hindsight, this is quite cleverly done although whether that was intentional or accidental..... The tone changes, the humour lessens and we find out that Frankie had one heck of a drink & drug problem going on for several years. He is also very forthright about the self-abuse he has inflicted upon his 'manly part' over the years and possibly still does. He seems very happy to share many events that included this 'manly part' but not so keen to expand on what brought him to recovery and how he feels he is coping with it. When I finally turned the last page, and reached the end, I was left with an unsatisfied feeling. It was like "Ok, that was that...... Hmmmmm". If you read this with a view to learning more about Frankie and the way he ticks, I think you'll be disappointed. There are a couple of surprises in some of his views and feelings on certain topics but, overall, not much is really given away. I can't help but feel that Frankie is a chap who loves the adulation that comes with being well-known but would prefer that he didn't HAVE to be well-known to get it.
Frankie Boyle is someone people will know from Mock The Week, the comedian who skirts perilously close to the edge of material acceptable on TV. In this book there are no boundaries to his material so this is not for the easily offended. Based loosely on his life but with an odd approach. While happy to share tales of drug and alcohol abuse, certain things are mentioned almost casually (the mother of his first child gets little more then a sentence) and while his current partner is mentioned there is no detail at all. His story is blended with observations and anecdotes which at times are very funny but also slightly repetitive and usually aimed at the same target subjects. I'm not sure who this book is aimed at, if you like autobiographies then this is not going to satisfy you, if you like stand up and Boyle, you might be better off buying a DVD of one of his shows. So this ends up being a bit of a mix and not quite satisfying in any direction. But there should be no surprises and anyone who is offended by this does not understand Boyle and his humour. So this is okay, but only just.
Laugh? I couldn't start. Give this book to someone you dont like and tell them it gets really good if you stick with it. Would like to say that this is like one of those films that are so bad they are good but this cant even reach that standard. Worst book I have ever read (even beats Clarkson) and I work in a Library. The book is like the man: Unfunny. Cant use decent Language for more than a few sentences. No Star. Needs recycled asap. I was given this by the Samaritans to show me no matter how bad things get there is always someone worse off than yourself. If you get to page 10 stop and save yourself from further punishment! Not straight to Bargainbin just straight to Bin!
