In an age of vigorously-marketed rag-trade clothes horses, Trinidad/New York/London collective The Magic Numbers are an anomaly; a word-of-mouth phenomenon whose affable live shows have been compared to happy clappy religious experiences and whose music - an unfashionable blend of soft country pop with Fifties and Sixties inflections - is evidently more important to them than the intercession of style gurus and hairdressers. The "kids" are converted and the band's self-titled debut album The Magic Numbers may prove to be the most surprising success story of the year. Comprising two pairs of siblings, the Stodarts (singer and songwriter Romeo; the girth of a bear, the hair and beard of a friendly fairy-tale giant and the voice of a mouse; sister Michelle on bass, keyboards, vocals) and the Gannons (the equally hirsute Sean on drums; sister Angela on vocals, melodica and percussion) the familial ties shine through in the wholesome, harmonious nature of it all, from the skiffle of "Long Legs" and the upbeat Undertones-flavoured pop of "Love Me Like You" to the melting, dreamy teen frustration dialogues of "Love's a Game" and "I See You, You See Me". The Magic Numbers offers conclusive proof that maths isn't boring.

The Magic Numbers do it for me!. I loved this album the very first time I heard it - the voices are great, the melodies beautiful and it has a lovely uplifting feel about it. Makes me feel very positive when I play it - great songs to sing along with too. I think it would be one of my desert island discs!

Magic, magic numbers. One of the most original albums that I have heard for a long time. I find myself smiling when I hear it and I couldn't pick a favourite track as all of them are just completely and utterly right- even my husband who is in his "greatest hits" phase ( you know when a guy reaches a certain age!!) loves the album. I say go on, buy it, if you never another other album all year buy this one YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY I promise. A complete and utter joy.

Fat sounds. I bought this album on a whim, having never really heard the band. At first I thought it was a bit dull, but with each listen my opinion improved, to the point where I was sticking it in the CD player every time I got in the car. These guys have harmonies that sound a bit like a 50's singing group, and also some guitar that reminds me of 90s indie, like Gene (and obviously some Smiths influence). The songs are fairly simple - it's the arrangements I like, which are unpretentious... the drumming often reminds me of bands I played in in someone's garage when I was 15. Laid back and quite simple but there's an air of excitement and you get the feeling that these guys really enjoy making their music. There are no songs on the album which make you reach for the 'skip forward a track' button. But equally there is no one track which leaps out at you and screams 'HIT!' (even the one that was a hit!). Nice cheery music, with some interesting instruments used at times (xylophone/stylophone type things). I have only given it 3 stars because I reckon it's not quite in the great albums of all time, but it hints at great things to come.

One of the best albums ever. I first happened across the magic numbers by accident, having seen them on mtv i thought what a refreshing change to see a group made up of real people not plastic manufactured muppets, on the strength of this i brought this album, my first impression was yes its ok but...then it crept under my skin, as all the best albums do and before long i couldnt stop listening to it. It is without doubt one of the most beautifully crafted albums ever, with surprises in every song which come at you from all angles. a simple masterpiece
SEE THEM LIVE YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED

5 stars isnt enough. I have listened to this album every day since I bought it, its abSolutely fantastic. Great voices, clever songs, catchy melodies and a well put together album. What I like is they change tempos within songs, so a slow song they up to a faster pace, and they do it at just the right time. I'll be listening to it tomorrow too probably...
