Serious stuff

Rated Rated 5 out of 5 by n8trm on 20th July 2010

This is not for the casual snapper, but for someone looking for the theoretical analysis of images this is the tops. Very well illustrated and carefully worded items give the person looking to improve a deeper understanding of what lies behind the 'feeling' of a good image - inspirational!

A good read

Rated Rated 2 out of 5 by Nishaanx, London, England on 12th July 2010

Being relatively new to photography, I purchased this book to help me get better shots quickly. Although there are a few really good points and chapters, I found the book in general quite difficult to read and understand. The terminology and explaination is very technical and for someone just starting out its rather impossible to make sense of it all. Although it's a good read I wouldn't recommend this to anyone starting off and would probably leave this book for those more advanced photographers who care about Fibonacci composition.

Step up to become a photographer

Rated Rated 5 out of 5 by nucleeus on 6th July 2010

The book is great.. i have been clicking pictures since long.. but this book helps understand what a photographer must keep in mind while taking snaps. It helps make the next steps towards sensible photography. Must read for any one who's interested in transforming his/her pics

The photographers eye

Rated Rated 4 out of 5 by B. REW-DIXON on 1st July 2010

I found the book to be informative and easy to understand as well as being a delightful read.

Wonderful book

Rated Rated 5 out of 5 by Eamonn Bolger, Waterford City, Waterford Ireland on 30th June 2010

As one who has only become interested in photography as a hobby since 2008, this book is a must (along with Understanding Exposure). Simple, concise, and with great images.

A huge learning curve

Rated Rated 5 out of 5 by Michael Thorpe, United Kingdom on 19th June 2010

Michael Freemans photography books are generally for those photographers with more than a basic knowledge, but who are serious about improving their photography. This book is posssibly the most technical book on compostion I have seen, crossing the border between photographic composition and the use of graphics in composing our pictures. Not a book to read and put away, but one to refer to time and again to improve one's knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis. Thoroughly recommended, but you have to be prepared to learn very technical stuff, and to put your new found knowledge to good use. My compositional skills are already significantly improving, and this new found knowledge will stand me in good stead in the future.

Eye for detail

Rated Rated 4 out of 5 by Peter A. Thomas, New Zealand on 14th June 2010

An excellant book with practical and theoretical information. Really good examples of techniques and approaches.

Academic and prosaic

Rated Rated 1 out of 5 by S. Vallely, Belfast, UK on 4th June 2010

I have to confess to being excited when I saw the contents page of this book but the reality was altogether something different. The book would be more appropriately titled 'The Photographers Mind' as it is essentially a rather wordy, academic and, I have to say, downright boring prose on the philosophy of various aspects of digital photography accompanied by some very average photographs which did little to enhance my overall enjoyment of the book. After reading this book I felt that I had learnt little that would in any way improve or, indeed, affect my photographic technique. I just felt relief that I could produce reasonably high quality images without having to micro analyse every aspect of what I was doing. I was left with the impression that the purpose of liberal quotation from other works was to indicate to the reader just how well read Michael Freeman was rather than clarify or impart knowledge to the reader. If you want an inspiring and well written book on photography I would suggest you take a look at Steve Davey's excellent Travel Photography Footprint Travel Guides rather than waste your time with this semantic nonsense

The basics of composition explained

Rated Rated 5 out of 5 by Lowdown, United Kingdom on 25th May 2010

Excellent book. Michael Freeman breaks down photography into its components. Easy to understand, plain language and always backed up with photos. Essential reading and reference material. He's been putting out real quality for 10's of years and REALLY understands digital!

a good guide to a better composition

Rated Rated 4 out of 5 by Francisco TBastos, Portugal on 21st April 2010

Overall this book is very helpfull in all areas of photo composition. Freeman goes through the various aspects on how to improve the way we 'see' the picture, illustrating with good examples of very different subjects on what to do (and what to avoid), with tips and hints for better layout and design.
