This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty.
Started off so slowly I nearly gave up! So glad I didn't though - this was absolutely brilliant, although a little confusing at times with all the jumping backwards and forwards through time. The ending is amazing, especially when you realise what's about to happen.
Found it very confusing at times & I have to admit I did have my friend, who had already read it, encouraging me to stick with it & i'm glad I did. Some really emotional parts that I just sobbed at. I point blank refuse to watch the film as I dont think it could possibly do the book any justice. Not the type of book i'd normally read but was excellent.
loved the book good read from begining to end, you will not be able to put down. Now for the film
I looked forward to reading this book, based on the fantastic reviews I had seen for it. The Time Traveler's Wife has a wonderful and fascinating plot, but her characters simply had no voices! I frequently found myself having to re-read dialogues to figure out which of the characters had said what. At first, I blamed myself, thinking my mind must have been wandering ("Cannot be the author's fault - must be mine," said my guilt.) But I quickly came to realize that the characters had no tangible personalities and, therefore, no unique voices. The way in which the main characters spoke on the written page could just as well have been words uttered by the time traveler or his wife. It was as though I was reading a bad translation of a very good book. You know the kind: one in which the translator has been faithful to the meaning of the words but has not translated the author's style and voices, which leaves you with a dry, unsatisfying collection of words. Dissapointing. So disappointing. So, I know I'm a voice against the crowd here, but I cannot give the book more than two stars - and those are for the plot. It's a rare book that would perform better on the screen than on the page!
I wanted a holiday book and The Time Traveler's Wife was recommended as their favourite ever read by two friends. It will certainly be in my top 10.
I first read this book when i was fithteen and found it a really had book to read at first as it keeps on switching between different times in two peoples lifes. It can get very confusing and it is a bad book to read in bed as you need to be wide awake at all times while reading it. Now at twenty one i have just read it again and found it eacy to read and i was compled to read it in one sitting even though i knew what was going to happen i would recomend this book to any one and sugest that even of you find it hard going at first pursevie because it is a great book.
I've just re-read this book and it's just as beautiful the second time and still makes me cry. It's not meant to be realistic so picking apart the time-travelling aspect is nonsensical; it's more about the timeless but frustrating love story. A great read and highly recommended!
The initial confusion I experienced as each chapter jumps to different times in the character's life soon made sense after the first few chapters, and realising that this creates some of the charm of the book. A beautiful story and extremely touching! I read the book before watching the film...the book is magnificantly better! Such an usual tale that I didn't want to end! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This book was recommended to my daughter who, in turn, recommended to me. I seriously could not put it down and had read it in a few days. I had to refer back to earlier chapters sometimes to remind myself of some of the facts because the Time Traveler really does do a bit of travelling! The story is quite amazing and had me laughing out loud and in tears at some points and I wouldn't have missed this read for anything. My daughter tells me the film misses out huge chunks of the story and I can see that this could happen as I don't know how they would translate to the screen. Anyway, my daughter-in-law is now hooked and passing to her mum when she has finished so I'm spreading the word where I can.
It is a very well written book, one of the few, which can be enjoyed by both girly girls and manly men. Additionally I would recommend getting the film based on this book as well as it is one of the rare ones that you will keep returning too.
